The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
