A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
