As late goals are commonplace at the Amex, the home supporters retained a sliver of hope. This faith was justified in during dying moments. Amid a chaotic goalmouth scramble, van Hecke showed calm to pass the ball into the six-yard box, where Rutter arrived to blast it home. The equaliser triggered rapturous scenes among the Brighton players and fans, while it was a crushing blow to West Ham's survival hopes.
The result does little to alleviate the drop zone fears surrounding West Ham, who remain firmly involved in the battle at the bottom of the table. Meanwhile for Albion, it is another example of their resilient spirit, but also underscores the inconsistency that are holding back their season.
